It is the successor to the Davenport Museum of Art. This gallery opened as the Davenport Municipal Art Gallery on October 10, 1928. The museum's roots are in the Davenport Art Association. It was established before February 23, 1878. The Figge Art Museum, one of the oldest art museums in the United States, is also considered to be the first American municipal art gallery.
